Garden activity is slowing down for the winter - and design season is upon us, so now's a good time to be thinking about your Permaculture design, especially if you would like to include trees and shrubs, - which most of my designs wouldn't be without!

Hmmm it wants to be a wildflower meadow, it wants

Hmmm it wants to be a wildflower meadow, it wants to be a woodland, which will it be? Maybe a bit of both?

Out on a beautiful site visit yesterday surveying a farm site for a small holding, horses and rewilding project.

Identifying existing habitats, potential habitats, and rewilding strategies. Thinking about options for placement of orchards, growing areas and stables. Highlighting erosion and other risks and recommending routes to build resilience and regeneration.

All in a day's work.

I love this reflection- bursts of colour in blank spaces at Derry city new urban farm 'Acorn Farm' where we've been leading an urban and project based permaculture design course for the city council staff behind the project. Teaming up once again with @carraigdulra and @ourganicgardens.
In our recent session we field tripped from city centre over to contrasting rural mountains of Donegal to visit and work at @ourganicgardens.

We put the work back into workshop here today with the @jacobsvegbox GetGrowing course participants. Spring has sprung and we'd lots of transplanting, pricking off, potting up and bed prep to get on with.
We made a a so called 'lazy bed' drill alongside a 'no-dig' bed and chatted about the history and context of cultural cultivation methods compared with this new fangled no-till carry on.
So interesting, good craic, loving these work n learn type series!

A new departure for us this year, bringing the Pe

A new departure for us this year, bringing the Permaculture Design Course on the road having been invited to work with the team behind the new Acorn city farm in Derry.

Together with @suziecahn and Joanne from @ourganicgardens we're experimenting with this new part in person onsite, and part online PDC tailored to a specific group and project.

It's a pleasure to be able to help bring a permaculture perspective to such a professional and collaborative team, and to learn along with them.

We do still have our flagship residential PDC running in @carraigdulra this summer and there are 4 places left available on that, starting at the end of May🐞

6 month permaculture design course participants graduated yesterday under beautiful blue skies!

We had a lovely final day of the course sharing project work and catching up with some of the course tutors who joined us for a springtime permaculture lunch (think nettles, pulses, eggs....)

We've had a brilliant time getting together for a day a week since September, field trippin', working, learning, connecting, planting, crafting, meithealling, designing.... and we're looking forward to emerging next steps, watch this space cause things are happenin'!

With gratitude to community, family, friends who've input and supported along the way. It takes a village to raise a permaculturalist 😄

An encouraging harvest on these unusual tuber crops this year.
Occa and Yacon
Nowhere near the yield of a spud mind you but, potential. And always good to have diversity in the diet - all those good gut bacteria need lots of variety coming in.

What do I do next @gardensforlifeireland ? Should they be separated? cured? Dried? Do those little tails need to be removed? How do I select and store Yacon starts for growing next year?
